Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with rising prevalence each year and is a major cause of cardiovascular complications in older adults. Age-related physiological changes and common sleep disturbances can further impair blood pressure control and reduce quality of life. Physical activity may improve fitness, circulation, stress levels, and sleep quality in hypertensive older adults. Objective: To analyze the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality among hypertensive older adults in the working area of Purwosari Community Health Center, Surakarta. Methods: A quantitative correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 159 hypertensive older adults selected using Slovin’s formula and consecutive sampling. Physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) and sleep quality using the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS). Data were analyzed with Chi-square and Spearman’s Rho tests. Results: There was a significant relationship between physical activity and sleep quality (p=0.001), with a positive correlation (r = 0.525). Conclusion: Higher physical activity is associated with better sleep quality among hypertensive older adults and should be optimized in elderly health.
