Abstract

Background: Preventing diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic condition, especially in the elderly, requires more education and lifestyle adjustments. Improving the knowledge and attitudes of older adults to prevent diabetes mellitus can be achieved through health education programs that focus on nutrition and healthy eating habits. Objective: To determine how much older adults learn and how confident they are about how to avoid diabetes mellitus through health education programs that focus on nutrition and healthy eating habits. Method: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design method, a population of 130 respondents with type 2 diabetes. From this number of researchers, determined a sample of 30 as respondents, including elderly people. A purposive sampling strategy was used to select these participants. The instrument used was a questionnaire that measured knowledge and attitudes. Results: There was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p<0.001). Before education, the majority of respondents' knowledge was low (86.7%) and attitudes were sufficient (63.3%). After education, 90% of respondents' knowledge was good and 90% showed good attitudes. Conclusion: Evidence suggests that health education can help older adults learn more about good nutrition and change their attitudes in this regard. Before and after health education, there were significant changes.
