Abstract

Background: Of several health problems, high cholesterol is found to be more common in the elderly. High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) are the two main types of cholesterol. Hypercholesterolemia occurs when blood cholesterol levels are higher than the normal range, which is <200 mg/dL. Objective: The study was conducted to identify the relationship between dietary patterns and cholesterol levels in the elderly. Method: This study used a quantitative correlational design based on a cross-sectional approach. 50 samples were selected by purposive sampling with the criteria of being ≥60 years old, willing to fill out the questionnaire, communicative, and individuals registered administratively/civilly as residents of the Kartasura Community Health Center Work Area. Dietary patterns were assessed through a dietary questionnaire and cholesterol levels were measured using a GCU device. Result: The Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between diet and cholesterol levels with a weak correlation. The Continuity Correction value (p-value=0,046) and Contingency Coefficient were 0,311 (r=0,311). Conclusion: In the Kartasura Community Health Center Work Area, there is a correlation between dietary patterns and cholesterol levels in the elderly.
